Collection: The Light in the Darkness
I went through a season of personal darkness while recovering from a head injury in 2023. During that period, I created this collection of paintings that helped me process the events that unfolded as a result of my injury and find that the Light is something we carry inside us.
The collection is made up of seven 12"x12" acrylic paintings on canvas, most of which were embellished with gold leaf. All are framed in gold and wired for immediate hanging.
This original poem pulls the collection together and expresses the sentiments of each it in a way that feels meaningful to me. You'll find each artwork's title within the written work:
Darkness sometimes creeps gradually in
Nonchalantly taking up space
Waiting for you to notice.
Other times, Darkness runs towards you
Quickly enveloping you in
its lonely embrace.
In these moments,
when Darkness is your constant companion,
you will make a choice.
Succumb to the darkness
Wallow and drown in it
Plod bitterly alongside it
Or
Turn from the Darkness.

Light shines through[1] the cracks and crevices.
Light springs forth[2] from deep wells.
Like tulips in winter,
Light grows in the darkness[3],
in places dreary and cold,
Unseen yet hoped for still.
Until, one unassuming day,
Light breaks through[4],
offers its beauty, shares its warmth.
Light casts a glow on the world around it.
Amid your darkest days,
Light is there[5].
True strength is knowing
Not that Light surrounds you but that
this Light is within you[6].
It has been growing
Quietly. Slowly. Perhaps even secretly.
